Simple Ways to Improve Your Search Engine Optimisation

by Dan

Search engine optimisation, commonly referred to as SEO, is one of the most important things a business can do. The purpose of SEO is all in the name – optimising websites to help them rank higher in search engines is an excellent way to get more traffic, and thus more business!

Whether you’re selling products, services or collecting ad revenue, ensuring that your search engine optimisation strategy is up to snuff can help a great deal in getting you more revenue than you otherwise would be stuck with. In this article we provide a few great – and easy – tips to get you started with optimising your website for search engines once you’ve found some useful keywords.

Getting started with SEO

Search engine optimisation is something that is commonly brought up if you get in touch with an SEM agency in Hobart, Sydney or wherever else, and there’s a good reason for this. SEO is a big part of search engine marketing (SEM) because it’s so important to getting higher ranks on search engines like Google, and the first step many take when optimising for search engines is on-page optimisation.

On-page optimisation involves inserting your keywords into the actual content of your site – basically, each page on your website should be targeting a core term, and what is known as a “basket” of terms that are related to the core term. Important things to include here are keywords in the title tags, as this will help Google to very quickly pick up what the page is actually about.

In case you’re unaware, the title tag is not in fact the headline on your page (which is actually the H1 header). The title tag is actually the content at the top of your browser, and is populated by your page’s source code in a meta tag.

More ways you can improve your search engine optimisation

Although not something strictly used for search engine optimisation rankings, including high quality meta descriptions is also another way to improve your search engine marketing tactics. In essence, meta descriptions are the ad copy of your website, informing customers or visitors what they should expect to find on the linked page. This in itself is a great way to increase web traffic, as all too often people will ignore websites that display incoherent meta descriptions or descriptions that simply reflect the content on the page.

If you get people in the door, though, you better make sure that you have good content on your actual site! High quality body content will not only ensure that your visitors are satisfied with the information presented, it will also allow for Google to determine that your website is worthy of climbing the ranks. Google particularly favours pages full of long, detailed bodies of content, so it’s best to ensure that rather than have dozens of pages with very small word counts, aim for a few larger ones with more detailed info (if possible, of course).

Creating a high optimised website for search engines

If you feel like your website hasn’t been doing as well in the search engine rankings as it should, there are probably a few good reasons for this. Always make sure that you’re aware of any pressing SEO needs your website has – the best way to do this is by creating an SEO to-do list to ensure that you have all bases covered on every page, and soon you’ll be an SEO whiz!
