Nexus, an IT support company in Exeter, UK, has released new information about what most IT support companies deal with on a day to day basis. They have created a top 10 list of most common issues, with problems such as failing to login and the ‘Blue Screen of Death’ topping the list.

Exeter-based IT support company has released new details about the most common IT support and maintenance issues. As a company that delivers these types of services, including various retained technical services packages, they have truly seen it all. After collating data over a period of five years, they have been able to accurately state what the most common issues for IT support professionals are.

The 10 most common issues were revealed to be:

Blue Screen of Death

  1. The so-called ‘Blue Screen of Death’.
  2. An inability to login to a system.
  3. Accidentally deleting important files.
  4. A computer that runs too slow.
  5. A computer shutting down for no apparent reason.
  6. A malfunctioning printer.
  7. A grinding noise coming from the computer.
  8. Slow internet connections.
  9. Losing connection with the WiFi router.
  10. Computers that don’t recognize USB devices.

Interestingly, while the services offered by companies like Nexus are designed to be highly technical, the ten issues above are probably the easiest to solve as well. It is believed that most people who do use IT support have only very limited technical computer knowledge as well, which is why they are unable to find solutions for the above ten problems themselves.

The first problem, known as the Blue Screen of Death, for instance, tends to be not a problem at all. In 98{71b550cbed0aca3fea2335d26076176dc834a5ad6e765af844b2cea64fe7483b} of the cases, if someone were to hit any key or click their mouse, the screen would change to a login screen. In 1{71b550cbed0aca3fea2335d26076176dc834a5ad6e765af844b2cea64fe7483b} of cases, there is actually a message on the screen, which people simply aren’t reading. In the final 1{71b550cbed0aca3fea2335d26076176dc834a5ad6e765af844b2cea64fe7483b}, there is actually something catastrophically wrong that needs to be fixed by a true expert.

Issues with login details and deleting files are also reasonably easy to solve and, in most cases, wouldn’t need IT support. Almost all computers have extensive help files and other resources as part of their operating system, which can help with everything from password recovery to restoring the recycle bin. However, people tend to be very quick to pick up the telephone and as an IT professional for help instead.

The vast majority of other problems are simply caused by poor connections. Generally speaking, a technician will have to come out to check all the wiring is properly in place and hasn’t been knocked out. However, nowhere in the top ten list are there any significantly complex issues that Nexus is actually built to deal with. That is not to say that they don’t deal with those types of issues, but rather that they are a lot rarer than expected.

Nexus also hopes that this information will not put people off actually getting help when they need to.

“It is quite funny to see some of the things people call us for to ask for IT support, says Peter Walker from Nexus. “They panic and worry that they have done some sort of irreparable damage. We now live in a world where it is very much man against machine, because people simply lack the understanding of what machines can do and what they are there for. If something goes wrong, even the slightest thing, they panic. We’re there to help them with these issues, of course, but we live for the truly catastrophic support issues. They make things so interesting!”
